Sone Aluko of Rangers celebrates scoring a goal during the Clydesdale Bank Scottish Premier League match between Rangers and Celtic at Ibrox Stadiu...

Rangers would always be happy to have Sone Aluko back.Indeed, if the events of 2012 hadn’t occurred, we may be praising the Nigerian international winger much more than we already do.

Sone Aluko won’t be afraid to have a pint on Paisley Road West because the quick forward will always hold a special place in the hearts of Rangers supporters for his role at an important period in the team’s history.

The winger scored 12 goals in 23 appearances during the 2011–12 campaign, including a magnificent solo effort in a 3-2 victory against Celtic at Ibrox that prevented our Old Firm rivals from winning the title.

Approximately twelve years have passed since then, and Aluko is finally putting up his boots.

And just when it appeared that he could be interested in giving the Premier League one last try.

Football player Aluko, of Ipswich, has retired.

Sone Aluko will declare his retirement from football when the Championship season concludes, according to Ipswich Town.

Along with fellow former Gers George Edmundson and Dominic Ball, 35-year-old Aluko supports the Tractor Boys’ squad, helping them achieve promotion back to the Premier League.

Aluko only played two minutes of Championship football this season, but he has made a little contribution to the club’s elevation to the top level. Ipswich has hailed the winger for his efforts.

With this news, a 17-year playing career that began at Birmingham City comes to an end.

Aluko, who came through St Andrew’s youth ranks, played for Rangers, Ipswich, Blackpool, Aberdeen, Hull City, Fulham, Reading, and Beijing Renhe.

Another former Ranger hangs up the boots

Not all former Rangers players have announced their retirement in recent days, though, including Sone Aluko.

Andy King, a former midfielder at Ibrox who was on loan from Leicester City in 2019 for a short but ultimately fruitless stay, has formally put up his boots.

The Bristol City player made his decision public on social media in a lengthy message, and it should come as no surprise that the Gers were left off the list considering King’s loan agreement at Rangers was terminated after just five games.

The 50-time Wales cap midfielder came up through the ranks with Leicester City, where he won the Premier League in 2016. At King Power Stadium, he is revered as a legend.

Rangers supporters will undoubtedly wish Andy King the best of luck as he hangs up his boots, even though they will more warmly recall Sone Aluko’s contribution to the team.
