Massimo Luongo joined Sheffield Wednesday from QPR in 2019. In his debut season, he made just 17 games before his injury history worsened.
During his second season, the midfield player was injured three times, missing the last three months of play and playing in just 13 games overall.
After that, he only made one appearance in the first three months of the 2021–2022 season. However, he was able to maintain his fitness for most of the second half of the season, which saw them advance to the playoffs.
Luongo appeared in two EFL Teams of the Week, recorded five assists, and was voted January’s Player of the Month.
But in 2022, he rejected a new deal and quit the team to play for Middlesbrough.
Even then, he didn’t really get better; he was only at Riverside Stadium for four months when his contract was terminated for failing to show up.
After that, Luongo moved on a free transfer to Ipswich Town, where he has enjoyed far greater success. This season, he has made 43 appearances and has been instrumental in the team’s back-to-back promotions to the Premier League.
Massimo Luongo is a “beautiful man.”
Journalist Joe Crann of The Star was quick to commend the 31-year-old, saying that after a difficult few years, her narrative has turned out “great.”
On X, he wrote: “Really happy for Massimo Luongo. Was a really nice guy to speak with. He struggled to make ends meet with us, had a difficult time at Boro, and coped with a lot of injuries; now days, he plays Premier League football and is fit every week. Fantastic tale.
Sheffield Wednesday should take heart from his narrative.
Massimo Luongo was always a gifted player, but his constant need for treatment made it difficult to bring out the best in him.
However, he has had far greater luck at Ipswich, where he has developed into a player that many other teams, including Sheffield Wednesday, would be very happy to have in their ranks.
Nonetheless, Luongo and Ipswich’s promotion from League One to the top tier is encouraging, and the Owls should undoubtedly draw a lot of hope from it.
If Wednesday had been demoted, their success would have been something to be envied, but if they can hold Danny Rohl, there’s no reason they can’t be the next big surprise at the top of the Championship.
