According to the most recent sources, League Two team Swindon Town is in negotiations with former Sheffield Wednesday academy product Dean Brennan to become the club’s next manager.

The Irishman played for teams including Luton Town, Stevenage, and AFC Wimbledon before retiring in 2012 and taking his career to the next level by becoming a coach. He never played for Sheffield Wednesday.

Prior to being named head coach of non-league Barnet in 2021, Brennan handled teams including Hemel Hempstead Town, Bullericay Town, and Wealdstone. Brennan succeeded Harry Kewell, the winner of the Champions League, early in the 2021–2022 season.

Brennan guided the London club to the play-offs in his second season of management after leading the Bees to an 18th-place finish in the National League in his first. Regretfully, Barnet was defeated by Boreham Wood in the quarterfinals.

Brennan’s team did, however, finish second this season. However, due to the harsh nature of England’s fifth-tier play-offs, Barnet was once again unable to advance to the English Football League after suffering a crushing loss to Solihull Moors in the semi-final.

Brennan is reportedly considering leaving the team. The Swindon Advertiser reports that Swindon Town and the 43-year-old are in talks to replace interim manager Gavin Gunning as the club’s next manager at the County Ground.

Whether Gunning will continue in his role as caretaker manager after Michael Flynn was sacked of his duties in mid-January is uncertain, should his compatriot be named the new manager of the Robins.

Author’s Perspective

Bringing in a manager who has had some success in one of the hardest divisions to gain promoted from, like Notts County did when they signed Stuart Maynard earlier in the season, may be a smart move on the part of Swindon. It just so happens that Maynard served as Brennan’s assistant manager at Wealdstone.

With the second-best attacking record in the National League, Barnet was one of the league’s biggest attractions this season. If the former Sheffield Wednesday player takes over this summer, Swindon fans can expect thrilling football.
