Thierry Small, a former Everton player, is available for a new three-year contract at The Valley, but Derby County wants to sign him this summer, sources told Football Insider.

The Rams are interested in acquiring Small, 19, as they want to bolster their roster in anticipation of their championship run.

According to sources, as Small considers his options, the Addicks will exercise their option to extend his current contract.

The left-back made 14 appearances for the League One team this season after signing a free agent transfer from Southampton to Charlton in January.

Thierry Small is being signed by Derby County from Charlton.

Small will presumably have to make a choice, but as of right now, Charlton’s offer is the only one on the table because no formal proposal has been received.

By choosing to activate his extension, the club would be in a stronger negotiation position and be able to extract more revenue from any agreement.

Should the 19-year-old decide to leave The Valley, Charlton might profit immediately from his signing, as the player only joined the team for free six months ago.

Nevertheless, under owner Charlie Methven, he continues to play a significant role in their aspirational future goals.

The Valley’s offer of a three-year contract might be alluring to the defender, who wants to settle down and grow without having to relocate as much as he has in recent years.

Small used to be highly sought after; last summer, Football Insider revealed that Tottenham was interested in signing him, and Rangers were also offered the chance to pursue a deal.

In an effort to return to a Premier League team, a move to the Championship might help him develop in a higher league.
