The Detroit Lions and quarterback Jared Goff have agreed to a $212 million, four-year deal agreement, as reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Monday, citing a source. His $212 million contract extension, which ties him to the organization through the 2028 campaign, also contains a $170 million guarantee. In a 2021 trade with the Rams, Goff and three draft selections were acquired by the Lions.
The 2016 No. 1 pick’s contract extension deal will make him the highest-paid player in franchise history. Goff will be the second-highest paid quarterback in the NFL after the new contract, with an average yearly salary of $53 million, behind only Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals ($55 million). After being acquired by the Lions in a trade that sent quarterback Matthew Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams, Goff, 29, has enjoyed success in his first three seasons with the team. For the first time since winning the 1957 NFL championship, he assisted the Lions in winning two playoff games in a single postseason.
The Lions saw their first two playoffs victories since 1991 and advanced to the NFC championship game under his leadership, finishing 9-8 in 2022 and going to the postseason with 12 wins and an appearance last season. In a radio interview conducted last week, Lions general manager Brad Holmes stated that Goff was “a high priority” for the team and that he had “earned an extension” after Amon-Ra St. Brown and Penei Sewell were signed to long-term contracts earlier this spring. As GM Holmes already stated,
I always believed in him when he came to us. We are therefore not surprised by what he accomplished this past year or even the year before. I simply understand his wiring. I am aware of his skill, his leadership, his mental and physical tenacity, and his qualities; I believe that his teammates and peers also acknowledge these qualities. I’m therefore pleased with what he accomplished and incredibly proud of all that he has accomplished.
