On Wednesday, 247 Sports revealed that it had significantly dropped the Tennessee Volunteers’ top football recruit, George MacIntyre, in its latest five-star rankings. MacIntyre fell about 20 spots to become the #30 overall recruit and the #5 quarterback prospect, making him the last five-star quarterback in the group.
According to 247 Sports’ national recruiting analyst Cooper Petagna, MacIntyre is nearly interchangeable with a few four-star quarterbacks ranked just below him. Petagna mentioned during a YouTube broadcast that both Texas A&M commit Husan Longstreet and MacIntyre could easily be swapped with Missouri commit Matt Zollers or SMU commit Keelon Russell. Petagna emphasized the importance of seeing these players compete against each other and noted that Zollers and Russell are trending in the right direction.
Petagna also highlighted the critical role of the Elite 11 camp for MacIntyre, taking place on June 18 in Los Angeles. He pointed out that MacIntyre’s recent live evaluations have been subpar, stressing that this camp is crucial for MacIntyre to prove his five-star caliber.
It appears that 247 Sports is placing significant weight on offseason camps rather than actual game performance in pads and helmets. Recruiting services often need to justify their evaluations during the offseason by finding reasons to adjust player rankings and generate discussion.
MacIntyre has the opportunity to improve his ranking at the Elite 11 camp, but there’s also a risk of dropping further if he doesn’t meet expectations, as indicated by Petagna’s repeated concerns and praise for the quarterbacks close behind MacIntyre.
