Following their loss in the League One play-off final, Bolton Wanderers released former Reading attacker Jon Dadi Bodvarsson. Oxford United defeated the Trotters 2-0 at Wembley Stadium, consigning Ian Evatt’s side to another third-tier season. Bodvarsson missed the final push for promotion due to an injury, but the Icelander still scored double digits and achieved his greatest individual tally since 2018. The 31-year-old scored 10 goals in the White of Bolton, including a brace against Reading on Easter Monday, and last reached double figures in his debut season as a Royal.
In two and a half years in Lancashire, Bodvarsson scored 25 goals in 94 games, compared to 17 in 56 for the Royals.
He posted on social media, “Dear Bolton Wanderers and fans. My time here has ended. Overall, it was a very delightful experience for which I will be eternally thankful.
The season and its conclusion were difficult and disappointing for a multitude of reasons, including missing the final, injuries, minutes played, and so on. “I’m sitting here thinking about it all while writing this, and it’s a very unpleasant concept and difficult to digest. But this isn’t about me; it’s about the supporters and the club. That is the most crucial thing.
I still remember the day I signed with this fantastic football club. To be honest, I wasn’t in a great mental state before enrolling. What I will say is that this club and you as a fan base helped me rediscover myself. “I always tried to express myself on the pitch in the best way I could, and I hope I was able to bring you joy and a smile as you left the stadium. In the end, that is what is most important to me.
“I’d like to thank my teammates, staff, and everyone involved with Bolton Wanderers for everything. I will be a Wanderers supporter for the rest of my life. My son was born here, and you made me and my family feel quite welcome. You’ll be back up there; the future looks promising for this magnificent football team.”
