The Georgia football program had eight players chosen in the 2024 NFL draft, including defensive back Tykee Smith. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers picked Smith in the third round, 89th overall, and on Wednesday it was announced that Smith has signed his rookie contract.
The contract is a typical four-year rookie deal worth $5.87 million, including a $956,066 signing bonus, according to Spotrac.
In 2023, Smith was a key player for Georgia’s defense, playing the STAR position and significantly contributing to the secondary. He ended the season with 70 total tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, and four interceptions, playing a vital role in one of the nation’s top defenses. Smith indicated that he anticipates a similar role with Tampa Bay.
“Todd Bowles said he could see me playing safety or nickel,” Smith said about his role for 2024. “If I play safety, I’ll have the opportunity to learn from Antoine Winfield Jr., which would be a blessing given his impact on the game. I can’t wait to get around him and learn from him.”
