MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Kansas City Royals scratched right-handed pitcher Brady Singer from the lineup due to illness less than three hours before their afternoon game in Minnesota on Thursday.

“He didn’t sleep well Tuesday night, felt unwell, and was up during the night — it’s a typical illness everyone deals with,” said Royals manager Matt Quatraro. “But pitching in a 12 o’clock game is different from how you and I would handle it.”

Quatraro mentioned that Singer came to Target Field on Wednesday but lacked the energy even to play catch.

The Royals called up left-hander Daniel Lynch IV from Triple-A Omaha to start in Singer’s place. Singer, who entered Thursday with a 2.63 ERA, ranked 16th in the majors, has a 4-2 record with 64 strikeouts in 11 starts.

Lynch last pitched in the Major Leagues on July 18, 2023. Over 52 starts from 2021-24, he has an 11-23 record with a 5.04 ERA.
