As the 2024 NFL season approaches, the Tennessee Titans find themselves in a somewhat ambiguous position. They could potentially emerge as one of the weakest teams in the league, or they might surprise as an unexpected playoff contender.
Currently, the prevailing sentiment among media members and fans leans towards the former scenario. Many doubt the Titans’ chances of securing a playoff berth. However, the reality is that there’s considerable uncertainty surrounding the team’s potential performance.
Quarterback Will Levis is entering his second season with the franchise and is anticipated to take significant strides in his development. The offensive weaponry surrounding Levis has also been bolstered, enhancing the team’s offensive threat. Moreover, Tennessee has made notable improvements on the defensive side of the ball.
Overall, the team has shown improvement since last season, with the front office displaying assertiveness in augmenting the roster’s talent.
Despite these positive developments, a substantial question looms over the Titans following OTA’s and leading into training camp and the regular season.
Bleacher Report recently examined one key question for each team post-OTA’s. For the Titans, the primary concern revolves around the ability of the offensive tackles to protect Levis and prevent pressure.
“The Titans made a deliberate effort to build around QB Will Levis this offseason, acquiring wide receivers Calvin Ridley and Tyler Boyd and selecting offensive tackle JC Latham in the first round. However, uncertainty remains regarding the starting right tackle position, and Latham faces the challenge of transitioning from right tackle in college to left tackle in the NFL.”
Fortunately, the Titans benefit from the leadership of renowned coach Bill Callahan, who offered praise for rookie offensive tackle Latham.
“[Latham] doesn’t carry himself like a rookie…He’s very intentional about his work. He works really hard…He understands—which not all rookies understand—that it is a job.”
Callahan continued to commend the rookie, noting his maturity and enthusiasm.
“And there’s an expectation, especially when you’re drafted where he was drafted, that you’ve got to come perform…And he’s aware of that…He’s got some maturity to him. But he also has a ‘youthful wonder’ that’s kind of fun to be around…There’s this kind of enthusiasm that he carries with him around the field that I think is fantastic…He’s made of the right stuff.”
With Levis being a young quarterback in development, protection becomes paramount. The success of the offensive line will directly impact Levis’ ability to execute plays without undue pressure or frequent hits.
While this objective presents a considerable challenge, the Titans possess talent on the offensive line. The key lies in the unit coming together and performing at its peak, a task that Callahan is well-equipped to facilitate.
As training camp and preseason unfold, all eyes will be on the Titans’ offensive line. If they can effectively shield Levis and provide him with time, the offense holds promise for excitement and success.
