Cardiff Rugby reveals the acquisition of a Welsh standout from an English team.
Cardiff Rugby has confirmed the signing of Welsh back-row player Dan Thomas.
The Arms Park team has been very active this off-season, announcing new signings including Callum Sheedy, Rory Jennings, Iwan Stephens, and Gabriel Hamer-Webb, among others.
Thomas, 30, spent seven seasons with the Bristol Bears, making 144 appearances. He will join a competitive openside unit featuring Wales internationals Thomas Young and James Botham.
Reflecting on the passing of his former England and Great Britain teammate Rob Burrow, Sam Burgess shared his thoughts.
Thomas expressed his excitement about joining Cardiff, saying, “I had a great time at Bristol and hold many fond memories, but I am now really excited to join Cardiff and represent such a great club. As a proud Welshman, returning home to Wales with Cardiff was a major factor in my decision.”
He added, “I’ve been very impressed by Cardiff’s style of play, which I feel suits my attributes and playing style. I’m eager to get involved and contribute to the team. Playing in the URC also appealed to me due to the challenge of facing various playing styles in different countries.”
Thomas, who came through the Scarlets academy, left west Wales for Gloucester in 2014. After three years at Kingsholm, he moved to Bristol, where he built a strong reputation.
Cardiff head coach Matt Sherratt expressed his satisfaction with the signing, stating, “I’m delighted to bring Dan on board for next season. He comes from a strong environment, having played over 140 games and won silverware, but also arrives with something to prove in Wales.”
“He fits our attacking style as a fast and dynamic openside, effective on both sides of the ball, with a lot of Premiership experience. Though already experienced, he is highly motivated to make his mark in Wales and will compete hard for a place in our back-row, while also mentoring young players in his position,” Sherratt added.
