Three underrated free agent targets the Milwaukee Bucks should consider signing
The Milwaukee Bucks are among the NBA teams with the most financial constraints, necessitating innovative strategies to re-tool their roster to return to the expected level of competition.
The 2024 free agency pool isn’t particularly strong. However, there are a few players the Bucks could consider signing to minimum contracts, whose skill sets could be beneficial. Here are three lesser-known targets:
Mo Bamba
During his time with the Orlando Magic, Mo Bamba showed potential as a future star big man in the NBA. After spending four seasons with the Magic, he was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers in his fifth year as part of a four-team trade that included both Los Angeles teams and the Denver Nuggets.
With the Lakers, Bamba averaged just 9.8 minutes per game in nine regular season games and had limited playoff appearances. Post-2022-23 season, the Lakers waived Bamba, leading him to sign a one-year veteran minimum contract with the Philadelphia 76ers for the 2023-24 season.
Bamba logged 13 minutes per game with the 76ers. So, why should the Bucks be interested in a player with a diminishing role over the past two seasons?
The simple reason is that he would serve as an excellent backup to Brook Lopez.
In more detail, Bamba could also act as an insurance policy should Lopez face age-related decline, injuries, or a trade. Bamba’s skills include a career 36.1 percent three-point shooting rate, an average of 1.3 blocks per game (despite limited minutes), and a career defensive rating of 107.3 according to StatMuse. These attributes make Bamba a valuable addition, offering a similar skill set to Lopez as a floor-spacing big man and shot blocker.
