Six players from the United Football League had their contracts terminated on Monday, marking the first day UFL players could sign with NFL teams after the spring season. Among them were two targets the Green Bay Packers had reportedly pursued.

The first, kicker Jake Bates, opted to sign with the Detroit Lions after a successful stint with the Michigan Panthers. Bates visited Green Bay but ultimately chose Detroit over five other interested teams.

The second notable player for the Packers was offensive lineman Liam Fornadel of the DC Defenders, an All-XFL performer in 2023 known for his guard play. Fornadel also visited Green Bay before deciding to join the New England Patriots.

Currently, the Packers have limited depth at guard compared to their tackle positions. Elgton Jenkins and Zach Tom, expected to start at right tackle, provide versatility across the line. At right guard, competition includes Sean Rhyan and 2024 first-round pick Jordan Morgan, who has been training at both tackle spots this offseason.

Depth at guard is thin beyond Royce Newman, with uncertainty due to the NFL’s performance escalator program potentially impacting his roster status. Lecitus Smith, signed after a rookie minicamp tryout, and Donovan Jennings, an undrafted rookie transitioning from tackle, are other guard options.

Despite missing out on their initial targets, the Packers retain an open roster spot and may consider signing a UFL player in the future to bolster their depth.
