Why NiJaree Canady has become an even higher priority for OU softball

Monday afternoon saw significant activity in the softball transfer portal, notably affecting OU and resonating across the country. NiJaree Canady, arguably the sport’s brightest star, entered the portal after two standout seasons at Stanford. Her impressive tenure includes back-to-back exceptional seasons and a National Player of the Year award as a sophomore.

Now, the competition to secure Canady begins. While she hasn’t publicly commented on her transfer, her social media activity hints at potential moves. Despite OU appearing as the frontrunner last weekend, the battle for Canady’s commitment is intense, and the process is far from swift.

With the portal window now closed, the extent of Canady’s recruitment challenge is clearer. While other notable pitchers have found new teams, no last-minute entrants have shifted the landscape, making Canady the top target for championship-contending programs.

For OU, which currently only has experienced pitchers Kierston Deal and Paytn Monticelli, Canady’s addition is crucial. Head coach Patty Gasso recognizes the need for more pitching talent, and Canady fits the bill perfectly.

Despite OU’s strong position, other schools are also vying to attract Canady. Her stats this season are remarkable: a 24-7 record, 0.73 ERA, five saves, 230.2 innings pitched, 116 hits allowed, 24 earned runs, and an incredible 337 strikeouts, including 24 complete games and nine shutouts.

A native of Topeka, Kan., Canady has two seasons of eligibility left and has been instrumental in Stanford’s back-to-back Women’s College World Series semifinal appearances.

Who’s Leaving and Who’s Returning?

We’ve mentioned it often, but 2025 will bring significant changes. Many familiar names for OU and softball fans will be missing. The senior class, which went 235-15 and won four national championships, has graduated.

“This generation has taught me a lot about coaching,” said Gasso. “They taught me to accept who they are and how it looks. I allowed them to be themselves, even when it was challenging. It’s important to them. They’ve made me a better coach.”

OU lost 10 seniors and another three players to the transfer portal (Avery Hodge, Quincee Lilio, SJ Geurin). However, the team will have eight returning players and will add eight freshmen. Based on OU’s usual numbers, there are likely around five open spots.
