Eagles Considered Potential Contenders to Sign Top Free Agent, Former Cowboy, Soon
The Philadelphia Eagles still have some budget flexibility and might pursue one or two significant additions before training camp begins.
Philadelphia has enjoyed a strong offseason overall, though there have been some setbacks. Notably, the Eagles lost future Hall of Famer Jason Kelce, who announced his retirement.
To fill Kelce’s spot, the Eagles will turn to Cam Jurgens, but this won’t be an easy transition. Although it’s unlikely, NFL Trade Rumors’ Logan Ulrich mentioned that Philadelphia could consider signing former Dallas Cowboys and Miami Dolphins tackle Connor Williams.
“Plan A for the Eagles in the first year without future Hall of Famer Jason Kelce is to move Cam Jurgens from guard, where he started last year, to center, a position he excelled at in college and where Philadelphia sees him as Kelce’s successor,” Ulrich noted. “They’ll look for a starting guard to replace Jurgens, with 2023 third-rounder Tyler Steen as the first option.
“However, Steen struggled last year with the switch from tackle to guard, and if these issues persist, the Eagles might need to adjust. They could move Jurgens back to guard and replace him with Matt Hennessy, a former starter in Atlanta signed for depth this offseason. Another possibility would be signing Williams, who offers potential at both guard and center and could leverage a stint with the Eagles and renowned offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland into a bigger contract next year.”
Williams, a six-year NFL veteran, is currently ranked as the top available free agent by NFL Trade Rumors. If Philadelphia is uncertain about their offensive line configuration, signing Williams could be a sensible move.
