The Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) announced today that Robert Dyer of the Knoxville Ice Bears is the recipient of the 2023-2024 Wanda Amos Community Service Award.

This award honors an organization, current team staff member, or league alumnus for their charitable contributions within an SPHL community.

Robert and his wife Kendra have been integral to the Knoxville Ice Bears since the team’s inception in 2002 and are founding members of the SPHL. Alongside his contributions to the team’s community initiatives and his military service with both the United States Army and Air Force, Robert has been a dedicated volunteer with the American Red Cross for over 27 years. His roles include Damage Assessment and Supply Chain Specialist, aiding communities affected by natural disasters.

“Ice Bears ownership has greatly contributed to our success,” said GM and President Mike Murray. “Robert and Kendra’s efforts have been crucial in sustaining professional hockey in Knoxville. Robert’s commitment to the community reflects our organization’s values. He consistently dedicates his time and energy where it’s most needed.”

Robert has extensive experience in disaster response, having managed complex logistics and relief efforts in over 160 national disasters across 90 communities. Notably, he spent three months in Pensacola, FL, following Hurricane Katrina, providing vital aid to displaced residents, and over two months in New York after Hurricane Sandy, coordinating relief operations in heavily impacted areas.

His dedication extends beyond hurricanes; he spent a month in Tuscaloosa, AL, and two weeks in Huntsville, AL, setting up emergency response systems post-tornadoes. In Nashville, his two-month deployment significantly contributed to community rebuilding efforts.

Robert’s persistent dedication, compassionate outreach, and leadership have restored stability in chaotic times and inspired new volunteers to join humanitarian missions. His unwavering commitment to service embodies the values celebrated by the Wanda Amos Community Service Award.

The award’s namesake, Wanda Amos, owned the Columbus Cottonmouths for 13 seasons and supports numerous charitable organizations, including Girls Inc. of Columbus and Phenix City, the John B. Amos Cancer Center, and the Elena Amos Breast Center.

In addition to the recognition, a donation will be made to a charity of Robert’s choice in his honor.
