Georgia’s Charlie Condon Wins Golden Spikes Award as Nation’s Best Amateur Baseball Player
Georgia third baseman Charlie Condon has been awarded the Golden Spikes Award, recognizing him as the nation’s top amateur baseball player. This accolade follows his recent win of the Dick Howser Trophy, given to college baseball’s best player.
Condon leads the NCAA in several key offensive statistics. He hit 37 home runs, the highest single-season total since Lance Berkman’s 41 for Rice in 1997. Additionally, he led the nation in batting average (.433), slugging percentage (1.009), total bases (233), and OPS (1.565). As the SEC Player of the Year, he also ranked in the top six nationally in on-base percentage (.556) and runs scored (84).
Condon is the first player from Georgia to win the Golden Spikes Award and the fifth finalist in the program’s history. He is the 11th winner from the SEC, the most of any conference. Throughout the season, Condon had seven multi-homer games and hit home runs in eight consecutive games from April 26 to May 9.

Georgia’s Charlie Condon Celebrates 37th Home Run Despite Loss to N.C. State
Georgia third baseman Charlie Condon (24) celebrates with a teammate after hitting a solo home run during the ninth inning of Game 3 of the NCAA Super Regional against N.C. State at Foley Field on Monday, June 10, 2024, in Athens, GA. This marked Condon’s 37th home run of the season, although Georgia ultimately lost 8-5 (Jason Getz / AJC).
Condon’s 37 home runs were just three shy of the SEC record, and he is tied for fifth all-time in the conference with 62 career homers in two seasons.
Condon was chosen through a voting process that included national baseball media, select professional baseball personnel, USA Baseball staff, and previous award winners, with fan voting also contributing to the total.
The other finalists were Arkansas pitcher Hagen Smith and Oregon State second baseman Travis Bazzana.
Last year, LSU outfielder Dylan Crews won the Golden Spikes Award and was subsequently selected as the No. 2 overall pick by Washington in the amateur draft.
