The 2024 NBA Draft is approaching, and indications suggest the Milwaukee Bucks might target a center with one of their two picks. Milwaukee has extensively evaluated numerous prospects at this position during their pre-draft preparations. Recently, two standout centers, Zach Edey and Kel’el Ware, ranked 15th and 19th in the draft class respectively, participated in workouts for the Bucks, according to HoopsHype’s tracker. These players offer contrasting styles.

Edey and Ware would bring diverse attributes to the Milwaukee Bucks. There’s speculation about the Bucks potentially parting ways with Brook Lopez this offseason. Adding Edey or Ware could serve as a succession plan.

If the Bucks intend to replicate Lopez’s role, focusing on a towering center who excels in a defensive drop scheme, Edey would be the logical choice. Edey could dominate near the basket, similar to Lopez’s role in Milwaukee over the past few years.

However, Edey’s limitations are apparent. He lacks outside shooting prowess, attempting only two three-pointers in his collegiate career spanning four seasons. His size also impacts his speed and athleticism, which are reasons Bucks fans are inclined towards moving Lopez for more athletic options.

Choosing a player who exacerbates Milwaukee’s need for athleticism would be questionable after their recent performance. This is where Ware emerges as a fan favorite due to his completely different skill set. Ware offers impressive athleticism, defensive versatility, and perimeter shooting (shooting 42.5% from three on 40 attempts last season), qualities that could revolutionize the Bucks’ center position.

According to reports, Milwaukee is considering new defensive strategies going forward, making Ware an appealing choice. His addition would significantly enhance defensive flexibility beyond the traditional drop scheme.

While both prospects may be off the board before the Bucks pick, it’s intriguing to observe their evaluation of such contrasting players for the same position. One option allows continuity, while the other promises innovation and new possibilities for the team.

Further analysis on the Milwaukee Bucks’ draft strategy is forthcoming.
