Jazz ‘Open to Trade Talks’ for Walker Kessler
The Utah Jazz might be gearing up for significant moves this NBA offseason. According to Jake Fischer of Yahoo! Sports, the Jazz could be open to trading their second-year center Walker Kessler if the right opportunity arises.
Fischer mentions that rival executives have sensed Utah’s willingness to part with the 22-year-old big man this offseason.
“Rival teams believe Utah is willing to engage in trade talks that would part ways with Jazz second-year center Walker Kessler,” reports Jake Fischer.
Just two seasons ago, Kessler was a Rookie of the Year runner-up after excelling on the defensive end, essentially becoming the team’s interior anchor following Rudy Gobert’s departure. However, after a somewhat turbulent sophomore season, Utah might be exploring the market to potentially move their young center.
During his second season with the Jazz, Kessler averaged 8.1 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks in about 23 minutes per game.
With expectations of the Jazz and Danny Ainge “big-game hunting” this summer, Kessler could be a valuable trade asset in acquiring star talent for Salt Lake City. Since entering the league, the Auburn product has been one of the top rim protectors and would be a significant defensive addition to any team.
At 22, Kessler still has a high ceiling and could remain a cornerstone for the Jazz’s future. However, the front office is focused on building a championship-contending team. It remains to be seen if Kessler will be part of those plans heading into his third professional season.
Expect trade discussions around the roster to continue as we approach the 2024 NBA Draft, with the first round starting on Wednesday, June 26th.
