In case you missed it, Tony Vitello has attracted significant attention from an ESPN media member. Former Alabama quarterback and current ESPN broadcaster Greg McElroy criticized the Tennessee Vols’ head coach for his “antics” following the team’s 6-5 victory over Texas A&M, securing their first-ever national championship on Monday night.
McElroy’s comments came the morning after Vitello celebrated on the field with his family, players, and fans. These remarks have faced widespread backlash on social media, including criticism from one of McElroy’s colleagues at ESPN.
Notably, Knox County mayor and 2021 WWE Hall of Fame inductee Glenn Jacobs, known in the wrestling world as Kane, defended Vitello. Jacobs playfully responded to McElroy’s comparison of Vitello’s behavior to that of a WWE wrestler, making a nod to Ric Flair’s famous rants about being a “styling, profiling” son of a gun.
McElroy has since apologized to Vitello and Tennessee fans. Despite the criticism, Vitello remains a passionate and fiery coach, endearing himself to his players and fans with his emotional and expressive style.
It seems the Big Red Machine is ready to support Vitello, whether in the ring or in public.
