Ahead of the NBA Draft on Wednesday night, Arkansas head coach John Calipari made an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, discussing a wide range of topics including his current roster at Arkansas and his expectations for the team in Fayetteville.

On Tuesday, the program announced the addition of two new players for the upcoming season: 2024 guard Jaden Karuletwa and transfer guard Melo Sanchez. These acquisitions mark a shift in Calipari’s approach to roster construction, which he further detailed during his appearance on Wednesday.

“I aim to have eight or nine scholarship players involved with NIL,” Calipari explained. “Others will also be on scholarship, but they must understand they need to earn their place and define their role on the team.”

Reflecting on past experiences where he started five freshmen and reached the national championship, Calipari acknowledged the challenges in today’s college basketball landscape, particularly against more experienced teams. He emphasized that his current Arkansas roster exemplifies his revised philosophy.

“I still prioritize recruiting top freshmen,” Calipari noted. “This year, we have three exceptional freshmen—DJ Wagner, Adou Thiero, and Zvonimir Ivisic—who transferred with me from Kentucky. Alongside them are returnees like Johnell Davis, Jonas Aidoo, and Trevon Brazile, who previously played for Arkansas. Now, with Melo Sanchez and Jaden Karuletwa joining, we have a solid group of eleven.”

Calipari expressed confidence in the current roster’s composition and highlighted the importance of team success in propelling players to the next level.

“When my teams succeed, it’s a boon for player development,” Calipari emphasized. “Winning big games translates directly into NBA drafts. With a Final Four or national title, we can see four or more players drafted. It’s all about winning.”

Discussing the administrative support crucial to building successful college programs, McAfee asked about Arkansas athletic director Hunter Yurachek. Calipari praised Yurachek’s proactive approach and support.

“He’s fantastic,” Calipari remarked. “He’s in constant contact with me, eager to assist however he can.”

The conversation briefly touched on Calipari’s tenure at Kentucky and his decision to join Arkansas, highlighting the opportunities and differences between the two programs.

“I felt it was time for a new challenge,” Calipari explained. “Arkansas offers incredible SEC facilities and robust NIL support, allowing me to involve my son on staff, which wasn’t possible at Kentucky.”

Currently in Brooklyn for the NBA Draft, Calipari is watching two of his former players expected to be selected in the lottery. The first round kicks off Wednesday night, with the second round following on Thursday. Coverage starts at 6:30 p.m. CDT on ABC and ESPN.
