Browns’ 1,000-Yard Playmaker Listed as Possible Trade Candidate

Jerome Ford had a breakout season, but with Nick Chubb’s return looming, the Cleveland Browns running back might be on the move.

Ford assumed the lead back role last season following Chubb’s injury in Week 2. After a limited rookie season, Ford amassed 1,132 total yards—813 rushing and 319 receiving.

Despite his success, Ford struggled with consistency at times, averaging just 4.0 yards per carry. With the Browns adding veteran talent to their running back group and Chubb expected to return next season, Ford could be traded for draft capital, according to Randy Gurzi of Fansided.

“Looking ahead to 2024, Ford faces more competition. The Browns signed D’Onta Foreman and Nyheim Hines in free agency and hope for Chubb’s early return. This could make Ford expendable, especially if they’re confident in Pierre Strong, Jr. as the third back until Chubb returns.

“Trading Ford might not yield a significant return, but even securing a day three pick for a former fifth-round selection would be worthwhile.”

The Browns have confidence in Jerome Ford.

Browns coach Kevin Stefanski is confident in running back Jerome Ford.

The Browns faced a tough situation last year when their lead back, Nick Chubb, was injured. However, the team has commended Jerome Ford for his efforts in stabilizing the offense.

“Jerome has done a nice job,” head coach Kevin Stefanski said on Browns Daily on May 1. “He had some really, really, really big moments for our football team last year. He made big plays for us when we needed it. We’re excited about that.”

The competition for the running back position might come down to Ford and veteran D’Onta Foreman, who has demonstrated his ability to contribute with tough yards when needed.

Nyheim Hines, who missed last season due to a knee injury, is expected to play a bigger role on special teams as a receiving back. However, Hines is determined to prove he deserves a steady role in the offense.

“I mean, I’m not the biggest guy in the world, but I’m not going to be scared,” Hines said on May 22. “I’m going to put my head down there. I’m known for my pass-catching abilities, so being labeled as just a return specialist was kind of disrespectful. I don’t know any other return specialist who has over 230 catches in five years.”
