Philadelphia 76ers Re-Sign 2024 NBA All-Star Tyrese Maxey.
PHILADELPHIA – JULY 7, 2024 – Philadelphia 76ers President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey announced today that the team has re-signed Tyrese Maxey, the 2024 Most Improved Player and NBA All-Star. The terms of the contract were not disclosed per team policy.
“Tyrese is an outstanding basketball player and an even better person. Since joining the 76ers, he has dedicated himself daily to growth and improvement, achieving remarkable results. His work ethic, drive, and energy inspire us all, and I’m thrilled to have him as a cornerstone of our franchise for many years,” said Managing Partner Josh Harris.
In his fourth NBA season, Maxey ranked among the top 11 scorers in the league, increasing his scoring average from 20.3 points in 2022-23 to a career-high 25.9. He also recorded career-best averages in rebounds (3.7), assists (6.2), and steals (1.0) over 37.5 minutes per game. At 23, he became the youngest 76er to average at least 25.0 points and 5.0 assists in a full season.
“Tyrese believes in the philosophy of improving by one percent every day, and he has exceeded that in his first four NBA seasons,” Morey said. “He comes from a wonderful family and is one of the hardest workers I’ve met. Alongside Joel and Paul, Tyrese is crucial to our goal of bringing an NBA championship to Philadelphia. This extension reflects our confidence in Tyrese, and I look forward to watching his continued development as a leader and superstar.”
Maxey achieved three 50-point games during his breakout season, including a career-high 52 points on April 7 against San Antonio, tying him for the NBA lead. He also had 22 games with at least 30 points last season, compared to 14 in his first three NBA seasons combined.
In 266 NBA games (193 starts) over four seasons, Maxey has averaged 18.2 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 4.1 assists. He joins Andrew Toney and Hall of Famer Allen Iverson as the only 76ers to total at least 4,500 points and 1,000 assists in their first 266 career NBA games.
Maxey has made 535 career three-pointers, ranking sixth in franchise history, and is 29 made threes away from fifth place on the all-time team list. His 39.6-percent three-point shooting percentage ranks 15th in the league since the start of the 2020-21 season among players with 500 or more made triples.
In the 2023-24 season, Maxey set a single-season franchise record with 15 games of five or more made threes, ranking 10th in the NBA.
Hailing from Garland, Texas, Maxey has helped lead Philadelphia to playoff appearances in each of his four seasons, with the team achieving a .632 winning percentage, the fifth highest in the NBA since 2020.
The 76ers selected Maxey with the No. 21 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft after one season at the University of Kentucky. With the Wildcats, Maxey played in 31 games (28 starts), averaging 14.0 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.2 assists. Following his freshman season, he was named to the 2019-20 All-SEC Second Team and the SEC All-Freshman Team. The former McDonald’s All-American also helped the United States win a gold medal with the U-18 National Team at the 2018 U-18 FIBA Americas.
