Tanner Scott believed in the process with the Miami Marlins, and now he’s an All-Star.

Miami Marlins pitcher Tanner Scott, known for his dynamic performance on the mound, has reached a new milestone in his career. The left-handed reliever, who joined the Marlins ahead of the 2022 season, has been named an All-Star for the 2024 MLB season. This announcement, made on Sunday, marks a significant achievement for Scott, who has transformed from a promising talent into one of the league’s premier high-leverage relievers.

Scott’s journey to All-Star status began with the Marlins recognizing his potential despite some initial challenges. Acquired from the Baltimore Orioles just before the 2022 season, Scott came with impressive but underutilized talent. His career ERA with the Orioles was 4.73 over 170 appearances, plagued by control issues despite a high swing-and-miss rate. In 2022, Scott struggled with a 4.31 ERA and a high walk rate but showed flashes of his potential, saving 20 games out of 27 chances after transitioning to the closer role.

Since then, Scott has made significant strides. Entering the 2024 season, he boasts 13 saves in 15 opportunities, with an impressive 1.42 ERA. His batting average against is .142, one of the lowest in MLB for relievers with over 30 appearances. Statcast data highlights Scott’s elite performance, ranking him in the top percentiles for average exit velocity against, expected batting average against, hard-hit rate, and fastball velocity.

Marlins manager Skip Schumaker praised Scott’s development, noting his role in high-leverage situations throughout the game. Schumaker regards Scott as one of the best relievers in the league, comparing him to elite names like Kenley Jansen and Aroldis Chapman. “There’s no question in my mind he’s our best guy — and not only our best guy, but I think he’s in the conversation for the best in the league,” Schumaker said.

Scott attributes his success to the support and confidence from Marlins pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre Jr. and Schumaker. Their trust has allowed him to pitch with greater freedom and effectiveness. “Since day one, he’s been a great, great manager,” Scott said of Schumaker. “It’s been awesome to play for him. Everyone wants to play for that guy.”

With the All-Star Game scheduled for July 16 in Arlington, Texas, Scott will be celebrating this milestone just days before his 30th birthday. His rise from a talented but inconsistent pitcher to an All-Star reflects his hard work and dedication. The transformation of Scott’s career underscores the impact of perseverance and support in achieving success at the highest levels of professional sports.

Scott’s journey from a promising player with command issues to a top-tier reliever exemplifies the hard work and determination that can lead to elite status in the MLB. As he prepares to represent the Marlins at the All-Star Game, the baseball world is recognizing his remarkable achievements and looking forward to his continued success on the mound.
