Fourth-seeded and 2022 champion Elena Rybakina has advanced to the Wimbledon quarter-finals after Anna Kalinskaya withdrew from the match due to a wrist injury. Kalinskaya began strongly on Centre Court, breaking Rybakina in the opening game, but Rybakina quickly recovered to level the score at 3-3.
Rybakina’s powerful serve was especially effective during the match. In the second set, the roles reversed as Kazakhstan’s Rybakina broke Russia’s Kalinskaya in the opening game. After holding serve and breaking Kalinskaya again to lead 3-0, Kalinskaya conceded she could no longer continue.
Now a favorite for the Wimbledon title following several high-profile exits, Rybakina will face either Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina or China’s Wang Xinyu in the quarter-finals.
“It’s definitely not the way I wanted to finish the match. Anna is a great player and I know she’s been struggling with injuries,” Rybakina said courtside. “If it’s the wrist, it’s obviously very difficult to play, and I wish her the best for her recovery.”
