The Tampa Bay Lightning have signed Cam Atkinson following his contract buyout.

The Tampa Bay Lightning announced on Tuesday that they have signed free agent forward Cam Atkinson to a one-year contract worth $900,000.

Atkinson, who was not initially a free agent when the Philadelphia Flyers’ regular season concluded in April, found himself on the market after a contract buyout on Friday. The 35-year-old veteran, who has dealt with injuries throughout his career, was about to enter the final season of a seven-year deal worth $5.875 million annually.

Atkinson is a two-time All-Star with seven 20-goal seasons, including 23 goals and 50 points in 73 games during his first season with Philadelphia in 2021-22. However, he missed the entire 2022-23 season due to herniated disk surgery and returned this past season to record 13 goals and 28 points in 70 games.

Originally drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the sixth round in 2008, Atkinson is a Connecticut native who played three years at Boston College. He scored 68 goals and 124 points during his college career, helping the Eagles win the Frozen Four in 2010. He was also a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award in 2011 as the NCAA’s top player.
