Red Sox Might Trade for Blue Jays All-Star to Address Major Deadline Requirement
Boston Red Sox fans have plenty of reasons to be hopeful.
Despite low expectations at the start of the 2024 season, the Red Sox have exceeded them and are in a strong position. However, with a lot of the season still ahead, Boston needs to bolster its starting rotation.
The team has a lot of exciting young talent and a shot at returning to the postseason, but adding a veteran starter would be beneficial. With the trade deadline approaching, All-Star Chris Bassitt could be an ideal addition. The Toronto Blue Jays are likely to be sellers this summer, and Bassitt has been named the second-best available starter, though a deal is considered unlikely according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
“The (New York Yankees) killer (0.82 ERA lifetime against) could interest the (Baltimore Orioles), but like Vlad Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette, he probably stays in Toronto,” Heyman said. “Trade chances: Very Low.”
Even with Heyman’s low prediction for a trade, if the Blue Jays continue to struggle, Bassitt would be an excellent trade target for the Red Sox. He has ample experience in the American League East and has performed well against the Red Sox’s biggest rival. Additionally, he’s under contract for next season, alleviating one offseason concern for Boston.
As Toronto seems to be heading towards a rebuild, Bassitt could bring significant trade value. While a deal is currently seen as unlikely, it shouldn’t be completely ruled out.
