Jesse Turner, the frontman for the Latin Grammy-winning band Siggno, recently shared how he has dealt with personal struggles, including depression, through songwriting since a young age.
Turner, in an interview with Tejano Nation radio affiliate La Voz 93.3 FM in Abilene, Texas, talked about the impact of his father’s death when he was a boy and how he grappled with this loss as a teenager.
“I struggled a lot. I was a depressed child, dealing with my dad’s death at age 7 and trying to understand it at 13-14, which led me to self-harm,” Turner said. “I ended up in the hospital and realized I was hurting my mom.”
Turner turned to songwriting as a way to cope with his depression, finding it therapeutic.
“That’s why I wrote ‘Mama’. I realized my mom was the true love of my life,” he explained. “So, instead of cutting myself, I started writing lyrics. I wrote song after song as a form of therapy with God and myself.”
Turner has written numerous memorable songs throughout his career, which began in 2000, including fan favorites like “Mama,” “Auxilio,” “Guardame En Espacio,” “Ya No Me Importa,” and “Mejor Dimelo.”
“Twenty-three years later, here I am,” said Turner. “I believe I’m the same person I was yesterday. I don’t chase fame, money, or success. I focus on making good music and telling truthful stories. My goal is to touch people’s lives.”
Turner also mentioned that his faith and music continue to guide him through life’s challenges.
“No matter what tests come my way, I always say thank you. Thank you for the struggle, the lesson, whatever it may be. I will work even harder.”
Addressing the band’s sound, Turner said, “People have asked if we are Tejano or Norteño. I’d say Rockteño because we incorporate a bit of rock. But ultimately, being from Texas, we listen to Tex-Mex, Country, rock, and more, which makes us Tejano.”
Siggno is currently on their Ayer Y Hoy Tour 2023 and working on their next highly-anticipated album. The award-winning band from Santa Rosa, Texas, known for their unique Rockteño sound, released their debut album “Al Principio” in 2001. They were nominated for Latin GRAMMYS in 2020 and won a Latin Grammy for Best Norteño Album with “Six Pack” in 2008.
