The Oklahoma City Thunder had a strong offseason, highlighted by their acquisitions of Alex Caruso and Isaiah Hartenstein, which positioned the team as a serious contender for the 2024-25 NBA season.
However, two key moves that might have flown under the radar were the re-signings of Aaron Wiggins and Isaiah Joe, both of whom secured impressive contracts. Wiggins signed a five-year, $49 million deal, while Joe inked a four-year, $49 million agreement.
Dan Devine of Yahoo Sports noted that Joe’s contract was among seven “under-the-radar” deals from free agency that could turn out to be highly beneficial. Devine highlighted that while Joe wasn’t the highest-paid free agent Oklahoma City brought in this offseason—nor the most expensive Isaiah—the deal is a great value. It features a descending annual salary and includes a team option for the fourth year.
Outsiders might overlook the significance of these re-signings in favor of the new additions, but Joe’s deal is particularly noteworthy for the sharpshooter. Since joining the Thunder, Joe has become a crucial role player in their rotation.
Devine also pointed out that although Joe might not assume a larger role with the Thunder despite his four-year contract, he will still have a significant part to play on a championship-caliber team.
Devine further emphasized the value of retaining a 25-year-old elite shooter like Joe at a relatively low cost, especially as future extensions for players like Williams and Chet Holmgren will start to impact the salary cap. Joe’s exceptional shooting and surprisingly strong defense make his return on this contract a highly strategic move for the Thunder.
