The Red Sox and Yankees might engage in an intense competition to acquire an All-Star pitcher.

Are the Boston Red Sox and their bitter rivals, the New York Yankees, locked in a trade deadline bidding war?

As the crucial two-week period before July 30 approaches, both the Red Sox and Yankees are looking to strengthen their rosters, with pitching as their top priority.

Both teams are specifically seeking an impact starter. Reports suggest that Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow has his sights set on Chicago White Sox ace Garrett Crochet, but Yankees general manager Brian Cashman is also interested.

The latest chapter in MLB’s greatest rivalry may unfold off the field as the two front offices battle for Crochet.

According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, Crochet would be an ideal fit for either team. Given the pitching struggles both teams face, no other contenders may need Crochet’s services more urgently.

“The Boston Red Sox have the AL’s best winning percentage since May 19 (31-18, .633), but the AL’s 4th-worst ERA (4.13),” Nightengale noted. “The only AL team with a winning record and a worse ERA during that span are the Yankees (26-25, 4.20 ERA). Garrett Crochet would fit quite nicely for both teams.”

Crochet’s destination will ultimately depend on what prospect capital Breslow and Cashman are willing to part with.

While it’s possible another team could swoop in with a better offer for Crochet, such an outcome would be far less dramatic.
