UNC Baseball: Dalton Pence Chosen by the Texas Rangers in the 2024 MLB Draft

After picking Casey Cook in the third round on day two of the MLB Draft, the Rangers used their first pick on the final day to select left-handed reliever Dalton Pence.

Pence was a standout in the UNC bullpen, emerging as one of the nation’s top relievers during the 2024 season. Whenever head coach Scott Forbes needed a crucial out, Pence was the go-to pitcher.

In his redshirt sophomore season, Pence recorded a 5-1 record with eight saves and a 2.45 ERA, striking out an average of 11.35 batters per nine innings. His performance earned him Second Team All-American honors from Baseball America, College Baseball Foundation, D1 Baseball, and Perfect Game.

Pence shone brightest when it mattered most, playing a key role in the Diamond Heels’ College World Series run. He secured the win in the regional championship game against LSU and the save in game two of the Super Regional against West Virginia. His standout performance came against ACC rival Virginia in the College World Series, where he pitched 3.1 scoreless innings in relief.

Pence now has the option to return to Chapel Hill for another season, possibly moving into the starting rotation. However, the allure of turning professional and reuniting with former Tar Heel Casey Cook might be irresistible.

Whether he chooses to stay at UNC or join the Rangers, expect Dalton Pence to continue dominating on the mound.
