PITTSBURGH — Cam Corhen, a forward for the Pitt Panthers, has only been with the team for a few months, but he’s quickly grasped the potential he has for the upcoming season.
Previously with ACC rival Florida State, Corhen averaged 8.8 points and 3.7 rebounds per game over the past two seasons, with shooting percentages of 58.7% from the field and 73.5% from the free-throw line. Last season, he started 12 of 28 games, posting averages of 9.4 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 0.8 steals per game, while shooting 62.9% from the field and 67.2% from the foul line.
Upon entering the transfer portal, Corhen was soon contacted by Pitt head coach Jeff Capel, who offered a unique approach that appealed to Corhen. “He wanted to expand my game,” Corhen said at a press conference. “He talked about areas I needed to improve, not just what I wanted to hear. I appreciate that about him.”
Corhen had previously faced Pitt on March 5, delivering one of his best performances of the season with a career-high 25 points on 8-for-12 shooting, 75%, and nine of ten free throws, along with eight rebounds, a steal, and a block.
Now playing at the Petersen Events Center, Corhen is excited about the support from the fans and the positive reception he’s received. “The energy of the building was crazy,” he said. “People recognize me around the city, and it’s a big city that I love.”
Corhen sees this transfer as a fresh start, offering him the chance to showcase and develop new skills. “I feel like it’s a fresh start,” he noted. “I’ll look like a whole new player this year.”
He’s focusing on improving his 3-point shooting, defensive rebounding, and post moves, aiming to regain his freshman season form. Capel’s vision for a stronger presence in the paint influenced Corhen’s decision to join Pitt. “He feels I can help take the team to the next level and achieve goals like winning the ACC and making a deep March Madness run,” Corhen said.
Transitioning from ACC programs has been smooth for Corhen, who has bonded with teammates and coaches, and is impressed by Capel’s established culture. Junior forward Guillermo Diaz Graham has been instrumental in helping Corhen refine his game, particularly in learning defensive techniques.
Corhen also has high expectations for the incoming freshmen, including sharpshooters Amsal Delalic and Brandin Cummings, and 6-foot-11 forward Amdy Ndiaye, who has impressed him the most.
With a promising roster that includes Diaz Graham, forward Zack Austin, and star guards Jaland Lowe and Ish Leggett, Corhen believes Pitt has the potential for a successful season. “I feel like we can win the ACC,” he said. “The school finished top four last year after a rough start, so I believe we can build on that and achieve more.”
