The Dallas Cowboys are reportedly prioritizing wide receiver CeeDee Lamb’s contract extension over quarterback Dak Prescott’s new deal, according to Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News.
“The good news is the Cowboys made Lamb their No. 1 priority,” wrote Watkins. “A person familiar with the front office’s plans indicated that the Cowboys are focusing on Lamb’s contract extension before addressing Prescott’s.”
Both Lamb and Prescott are set to become free agents after the 2024-25 season.
This report comes just before the Cowboys’ training camp in California next week. Watkins mentioned that it remains unclear whether Lamb will continue his contract holdout.
“When Lamb arrives in Southern California for work is unknown,” Watkins stated. “A source close to Lamb revealed that no final decision has been made about continuing the holdout when training camp starts. The Cowboys want Lamb in camp, but the slow negotiations might speed up once the team arrives in California.”
The Cowboys are likely prioritizing Lamb in part because of his holdout. They aren’t concerned about being without Prescott at the start of the season, so they feel less urgency to finalize his deal.
“Prescott is expected to be on the field next Thursday for the first training camp practice of the summer,” Watkins added. “Prescott’s significant contract can be finalized later, given that he’s ready to work.”
As the Cowboys begin training camp, it is clear that Lamb and Prescott are crucial to their potential Super Bowl run.
Lamb led the league in receptions (135) last year and ranked in the top three for receiving yards (1,749) and touchdowns (12). It was his best season yet, and he’s looking to build on it this year.
Prescott also had one of his best seasons, with 4,516 passing yards and 36 touchdowns, making a strong case for league MVP.
