The 2024 BYU football roster now includes Cal transfer Marquis Montgomery, a notable newcomer absent from last week’s media days roster. Previously a tight end at Cal, Montgomery is listed as a 6’4″, 220-pound wide receiver at BYU. He might play a hybrid tight end/wide receiver role similar to Keanu Hill, although Hill is 20 pounds heavier, influencing the decision to list Montgomery as a receiver. BYU originally recruited Montgomery as a wide receiver when he was a top recruit from Snow College.

Montgomery will wear number 20 for BYU this season and has one season of eligibility left. He will at least add depth to BYU’s receiving corps. After entering the transfer portal this spring, Montgomery received offers from Alabama, Colorado, San Jose State, and other smaller schools, but chose to join BYU as a preferred walk-on last month.

Montgomery has a longstanding relationship with the BYU staff, dating back to when he was a highly sought-after recruit in the 2023 class from Snow College, garnering over 40 scholarship offers from top programs like USC, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, and Penn State. He committed to Cal after an official visit and had a limited role in 2023, with 3 receptions for 31 yards, before entering the transfer portal this spring.

At Snow College, Montgomery was a wide receiver, standing out for his size and athleticism. Though listed at 6’3″ and 230 pounds at Cal, he arrives at BYU a few pounds lighter.
