Did former Tar Heel Danny Green just suggest he might be making an NBA comeback?

Remember the 2009 UNC men’s basketball team, which is often debated as the greatest in the program’s history?

That championship-winning Tar Heels roster featured several future NBA players, most notably Tyler Hansbrough and Ty Lawson. The starting lineup also included Marcus Ginyard, Deon Thompson, and Wayne Ellington, with Ellington’s perimeter shooting helping him secure a solid NBA career.

One player who doesn’t get enough credit from that roster is Danny Green. Known for his defensive prowess—evidenced by his 2009 All-ACC Defensive Team selection—Green also improved his scoring each season.

Green’s most memorable moment at UNC, aside from winning the 2009 NCAA Tournament, was dunking over Greg Paulus at Duke. I remember watching that game on TV, but imagine being there and seeing the stunned faces of the Cameron Crazies.

Green was a solid player for the Tar Heels, but like Cole Anthony, he truly flourished in his NBA career. He became known for his excellent perimeter shooting, especially in the playoffs, and has won three NBA Finals championships.

Now a 15-year NBA veteran, Green is currently a free agent. At 37, he still believes he can continue playing in the league.

In a recent interview at Ballin in the RGV, a Texas-based basketball camp he hosted, Green said:

“I would love to come back if I had the opportunity,” Green stated. “I have not officially retired. There’s free agency going on right now, and my phone lines are open.”

With the NBA regular season starting in October, Green’s timing is perfect. Teams always need 3-point shooting, especially in today’s game. Where might Green land if he signs with a team?
