As soon as it was announced that NiJaree Canady, widely regarded as college softball’s top pitcher over the past two seasons, was entering the transfer portal, Oklahoma immediately emerged as a potential destination.
The fit seemed almost perfect: Canady, a former Stanford star seeking to join a championship-caliber team, and the Sooners, who are in need of pitching reinforcement following their NCAA record fourth consecutive championship win.
A month has passed since Canady entered the portal, and while there has been much speculation about where she might land, including potential interests from Florida, Florida State, Texas, and Oklahoma, there has been no official word on her decision or preferences. Canady will need to finalize her choice and enroll at a new school within the next month.
Oklahoma’s appeal to Canady is not just about the opportunity to pitch but also the chance to be part of one of college softball’s most formidable offenses, along with the rich history, tradition, and resources the program offers. Additionally, the potential for Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities will also play a significant role in her decision.
Despite the Sooners’ clear interest in securing Canady, there is a complication to address. After the 2024 season, and with roster changes due to player eligibility and transfers, head coach Patty Gasso had five roster spots to fill, which included the addition of eight new freshman players. Recently, Oklahoma filled the final roster spot with Sam Landry, a standout pitcher from Louisiana and All-Sun Belt First-Team selection.
This development might suggest that Canady will not join Oklahoma, but it would be premature to rule it out completely. Given Canady’s background from Topeka, Kansas, which would make it easier for her family and friends to attend games, and Gasso’s proven ability to attract top talent, the possibility of Canady coming to Norman is still very much alive.
Should Canady decide to join the Sooners, it would solidify their position as the presumptive preseason No. 1 for the next season. While Oklahoma can still be a strong contender without her, Canady’s addition would significantly enhance their already impressive dynasty in college softball.
