Who could have predicted the latest twist in the OU softball world? Despite the recent surge of Texas Tech rumors, no one expected NiJaree Canady to choose Lubbock. Yet, she shocked the softball community by announcing her commitment to Texas Tech on Wednesday. Reports suggest this decision was influenced by a historic Name, Image, and Likeness deal, which helped secure one of the sport’s top players for the Red Raiders.
OU, like many other schools, made a strong push for Canady, with head coach Patty Gasso leading the effort. After a visit in June, it seemed like OU had laid all its cards on the table and was waiting for a decision. Initially, OU appeared to be the frontrunner, but other programs continued their pursuit.
Canady had an impressive season with Stanford, boasting a 24-7 record, a 0.73 ERA, five saves, and 337 strikeouts over 230.2 innings. She was instrumental in Stanford reaching the Women’s College World Series semifinals for two consecutive seasons and earned the National Player of the Year title. Hailing from Topeka, Kansas, Canady has two seasons of eligibility left.
When OU added Sam Landry to their roster less than two weeks ago, some speculated that they were out of the running for Canady. Although that wasn’t entirely true, Gasso and her staff recognized the need to prepare for any outcome. They couldn’t wait indefinitely, and this time, their efforts didn’t pan out.
OU has been proactive in strengthening their team, adding players like Landry, Isabella Smith (Campbell), and dynamic position players. As four-time defending national champions, the Sooners will enter 2025 as one of the top teams, though not the very top.
Gasso has expressed excitement about coaching the new freshmen and starting fresh in 2025. With eight freshmen, eight returning players, and five portal additions, the 2025 Sooners are set, barring any last-minute changes.
