Over the past few months, discussions about the Detroit Tigers have mainly focused on potential trades, but there’s also a possibility they might add players. Keeping Tarik Skubal would strengthen the case for acquiring more talent, as their postseason chances aren’t as slim as they might appear.

Even if they fall short, the Tigers have shown promise recently, with their young players proving they can compete at the major league level. This development is encouraging and could signal the start of a better era for Detroit baseball.

If the Tigers decide to make additions before the trade deadline, they could focus on several key areas. Securing a long-term first baseman, catcher, and especially a shortstop seems crucial. Despite Javier Baez’s three remaining contract years, which complicates the decision to bench or release him, finding an upgrade at shortstop should be a priority given his lack of production.

Mark Feinsand of MLB.com highlighted the need for a new shortstop, noting Detroit’s alarming lack of production at the position, with their shortstops posting a combined .489 OPS, significantly lower than the next worst team. Despite Baez’s $73 million contract over the next three years and his current platoon status with Zach McKinstry, bringing in help at shortstop should be a priority by next season.

There aren’t many young shortstops available on the market, as teams usually hesitate to trade them. Bo Bichette has been mentioned in trade rumors, but his price might be too high for the Tigers unless they are confident about contending for the division next season, which isn’t out of the question.

As the trade deadline approaches, the Tigers may find opportunities amidst the shifting dynamics in the league. Time will tell what moves they will make.
