FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — A comment from Clemson’s Dabo Swinney at ACC Media Days hit hard. According to a story by David Hale at ESPN, a new rule expanding football scholarship limits from 85 to 105 players could eliminate walk-ons. The Burlsworth Trophy, awarded annually to a player who began his college career without a scholarship and became a star, could be affected.

Consider this: Brandon Burlsworth, one of the most celebrated players in Razorback history, might never have played if this rule had existed. As a high school senior from Harrison, he likely wouldn’t have been given a chance by then-coach Danny Ford.

Razorbacks coach Sam Pittman hasn’t commented yet, but he stated in the spring that he opposed eliminating walk-ons. However, if the rule is implemented, he might appreciate the opportunity to recruit higher-ranked players.

North Carolina coach Mack Brown expressed concerns, saying, “I have to tell them in January they can’t play football anymore. That’s the hardest thing for kids. The money’s crazy, but we’ll deal with all that. But telling a kid that’s been on your team and done everything right that you can’t play football anymore?”

Pittman will likely join other coaches in opposing the rule. The coaches’ association seems united on this issue. “This is the most united coaches have been in the history of football,” Swinney said. “It’s so frustrating.”

Despite their frustration, no coach is willing to risk their career over this issue. Coaches prioritize winning, which directly influences their salaries.

For Razorback fans, this rule change could jeopardize the Burlsworth Trophy. However, it’s too early to panic. The rule isn’t finalized yet, and no immediate overreaction is needed. Still, it’s worth considering the potential impact on the trophy’s significance.

The Burlsworth Trophy isn’t for Heisman contenders but honors the memory of a player who epitomizes the walk-on spirit. This award is now at risk because of the proposed addition of 20 scholarships. While it’s not a done deal, everyone is anticipating it, so the final stance of the coaches remains to be seen.
