Former Los Angeles Rams superstar defensive lineman Aaron Donald announced his retirement in March. The Rams confirmed this decision on Friday by officially placing him on the reserve/retired list, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
Donald, a guaranteed first-ballot Pro Football Hall of Famer in five years, concluded his decade-long career as one of the greatest defensive players in NFL history. The three-time Defensive Player of the Year was selected to the Pro Bowl every season he played and earned eight First-Team All-Pro honors. He was also named to the NFL’s 2010s All-Decade team.
During Donald’s career, the Rams experienced significant success, making the playoffs five times and securing three NFC West titles, two NFC championships, and one Super Bowl victory.
Donald ended his career with 111 sacks, including an NFL-leading 20.5 in 2018. He also recorded 543 tackles, 260 quarterback hits, and 24 forced fumbles.
In his final season, Donald continued to excel, posting eight sacks, 23 quarterback hits, and 53 tackles while helping the Rams make the playoffs. He once again earned First Team All-Pro honors.
In an exclusive interview at his childhood home, Donald explained to his wife, Erica, the reasons behind his decision to retire, as reported by Rams senior staff writer Stu Jackson.
“I’m complete. I’m full,” Donald said.
“The passion to play the game is no longer there for me. I will always love football, but the thought of going through another camp and another 17-game season just doesn’t appeal to me anymore. I’m burnt out. The best way to describe it is that I’m full and satisfied with what I accomplished in 10 years. At 32, I think it’s time for me to retire from football and move on to the next chapter of my life and career. It’s time to move on.”
The rest of the NFL, especially the NFC West, is likely relieved they won’t have to face Donald again. However, the Rams now need to find a way to move forward without the player who has been their invaluable stalwart and anchor since 2014.
