One of the most intriguing players for the Wolverines heading into the 2024 season is sophomore wideout Semaj Morgan. As a freshman, Morgan demonstrated his potential as a dangerous playmaker. He ranked third among wideouts with 22 receptions and 204 receiving yards and was second in touchdown receptions with two. Additionally, he scored two rushing touchdowns and led the team in kick return yards (186) and punt return yards (101).
This season, Morgan will sport a different look, switching his number from 82 to zero. This number change carries significant weight, following in the footsteps of U-M legend Mike Sainristil. Head coach Sherrone Moore explained that earning the number zero required more than just a request; it was a privilege Morgan had to earn.
“He’s done an outstanding job of changing his body in a good way to maintain his speed,” Moore said. “He got a 4.0 this semester, which was a big factor in allowing him to get the number zero, a number he persistently requested. He’s done an outstanding job, and we’re excited about what he’ll achieve this year.”
Morgan, now donning the number zero jersey, has established himself as one of the hardest working players on the team. Standing at 5-10 and 176 pounds, he may not be the biggest player on the field, but as Moore points out, Morgan plays much bigger than his size.
“Semaj is probably one of the best practice players on the team,” Moore said. “He practices so hard that he loses about five to six pounds every session and has to gain it back. Despite his smaller stature, he plays like he’s 200 pounds… and he’ll tell you that too.”
With the Wolverines losing their top two receivers to the NFL Draft this off-season, the team will rely on several younger wideouts to step up. Morgan appears to be in the best position to have a standout year in 2024.
