49ers’ Brock Purdy abandons politeness: ‘I want to dominate’
His future Hall of Fame left tackle is holding out, and his leading receiver is holding in. His own 2024 salary could be considered one of the most unjust compensation packages in NFL history.
Yet, Brock Purdy isn’t worried about any of that. He has bigger and more intense things on his mind.
Entering his third season, the San Francisco 49ers’ Pro Bowl quarterback is determined to dominate, maintaining a “bloody mindset” that leads to blowout victories and creates an unbreakable aura.
Yes, the unassuming guy who looks like he’s heading to a sociology lecture at Iowa State is done being polite.
Purdy isn’t satisfied with just continuing the remarkable underdog story that started when he was the 262nd and last pick of the 2022 draft. He aims to emulate Tom Brady’s ruthless greatness.
Purdy made this clear during the second practice of training camp, when he yelled at wideout Deebo Samuel for running the wrong route. He reiterated his point after practice, saying, “With the team we have, I want to get to the point where by the third quarter, we’re converting on third downs, scoring touchdowns, and making the lead insurmountable. It’s about having that Tom Brady feeling, where you know he’s going to take over and not leave it close. I feel like I can reach that level.”
Purdy’s ambition is bold for a 24-year-old often dismissed as a system quarterback by many fans and media members outside the Bay Area. But Purdy doesn’t care about others’ perceptions. He’s determined to turn his aspirations into reality, having already defied expectations by making the team as a rookie, leading the Niners to the 2022 NFC Championship Game, and recovering from a severe arm injury to take the team to the brink of a championship last year.
Next March, Purdy will be eligible for a significant contract extension, hinting at a salary-cap impact that gives the 2024 season a “Last Dance” feel.
Niners fans can take heart, as Purdy believes he’s just beginning to show his full potential.
“I want to be dominant,” Purdy said. “Not just win games, but dominate with consistent decisions and feel like we’re the top dogs every day.
“Last year, there were moments where I thought, ‘Be smart with the ball,’ or ‘Let’s not mess up.’ I want to break through that and be dominant for four quarters. That’s my mindset.”
Purdy’s intensity has been evident to his teammates, including Deebo Samuel, who received a firm rebuke for running the wrong route during a walk-through. Purdy’s leadership has been accepted by other star teammates like George Kittle, Christian McCaffrey, and Brandon Aiyuk.
“I honestly don’t feel like Brock is fazed at all by guys saying, ‘Give me the ball,’” All-Pro fullback Kyle Juszczyk said. “He’s kind of like, ‘Shut up.’”
Purdy, who married his college sweetheart Jenna Brandt in March, acknowledges that his assertive approach doesn’t translate to his personal life. However, he holds himself to extremely high standards, despite leading the league with a 113.0 passer rating in 2023 and achieving significant late-game heroics.
Reflecting on past games, Purdy strives for even greater precision and intensity in future postseason tests. His mindset is to “take it” rather than expect victories to be handed to him, a lesson he aims to apply consistently throughout the season.
Purdy’s commitment to this mindset is evident even in early training camp practices. He’s not messing around, as he chases that Tom Brady-like dominance.
When you’re aiming for such greatness, how can you afford to?
