Fall camp has begun for the Oklahoma Sooners, signaling that the start of the 2024 college football season is less than a month away. The time for speculation is ending as OU and the rest of college football will soon have to prove themselves on the field.
On3’s J.D. PicKell, who has been praising the Oklahoma Sooners in recent months, analyzed their schedule and predicted each game. He forecasts a 6-6 season for the Sooners in 2024, including a 2-6 record in their inaugural SEC season.
PicKell predicts the Sooners will start the season 3-0 with victories over Temple, Houston, and Tulane, followed by a three-game losing streak to Tennessee, Auburn, and Texas.
According to PicKell, Oklahoma will then defeat South Carolina, lose to Ole Miss, beat Missouri and Maine, before dropping their final two games to Alabama and LSU.
Despite the challenging schedule, a 6-6 season would be seen as a disastrous start to Oklahoma’s time in the SEC and seems quite unlikely.
On paper, Oklahoma appears stronger than Tennessee and Auburn. In 2023, Texas was considered the better team, but that didn’t matter in the Red River Rivalry game. While games against Ole Miss, Alabama, and LSU will be tough, the finale against LSU is more about the atmosphere than the quality of a team that lost a Heisman-winning quarterback, two first-round wide receivers, and needs significant defensive improvements.
Alabama will be a formidable opponent, but it remains to be seen if they will be as dominant as they have been over the past 15 years. Visiting Norman will be no easy task.
While predicting a disappointing season for the Oklahoma Sooners is simple, a 6-6 record would indeed be bad. However, the floor for this team seems more likely to be 8-4 rather than 6-6.
