Edmonton Elks to Play Without RB Kevin Brown as Tre Ford Returns to Starting Lineup

The 27-year-old has been placed on the one-game injured list due to a shoulder issue that limited his practice participation this week. This injury is the latest challenge in a tough season for both Brown and his team.

Brown had a standout season in 2023, rushing 186 times for 1,141 yards and four touchdowns, and adding 28 receptions for 222 yards and another touchdown. However, this year has been less successful, with just 54 carries for 221 yards and 21 catches for 132 yards in seven losses.

Although the promotion of dual-threat quarterback Tre Ford to the starting role was expected to boost Brown’s performance, he will remain sidelined for another week. In Brown’s absence, returner Javon Leake, who has accumulated 120 rushing yards and 87 receiving yards this season, will start. Former Indoor Football League all-star Justin Rankin has also been activated.

Aside from the loss of Brown, the Elks’ offensive lineup will largely stay the same as it has been under McLeod Bethel-Thompson. Backup receiver Arkell Smith (chest) will also be missing from the lineup.

On defense, cornerback Marcus Lewis (foot) has been placed on the six-game injured list after recording 13 tackles and an interception this year. Devodric Bynum will start on the boundary side, with Leon O’Neal Jr. providing additional depth in the secondary. Canadian linebacker Michael Brodrique will return to the lineup, replacing rookie DK Bonhomme on the game-day roster.

The Edmonton Elks (0-7) will face the Saskatchewan Roughriders (5-2) on Saturday, August 3, at 7:00 p.m. EDT.
