On Saturday, Baltimore Orioles rookie Cade Povich had one of the strongest performances of his young career, pitching a career-high 6 1/3 innings against the Boston Red Sox. He allowed just two runs on six hits without issuing a walk and tied his career-best with six strikeouts, earning a standing ovation at Camden Yards.
Despite Povich’s impressive effort, the Orioles still lost, 5-1. To make matters worse, the team sent him back to the minor leagues immediately after the game, raising further concerns about their handling of young players.
On Sunday, Baltimore announced that Povich had been optioned back to Triple-A Norfolk and that right-handed pitcher Colin Selby would be called up to take his place.
This decision adds to Povich’s challenging start in the majors. The 24-year-old rookie has struggled, posting a 1-6 record with a 5.77 ERA and a 1.58 WHIP in nine starts this season. Since the All-Star Break, he has only made two starts as his playing time has diminished.
It will be challenging for Povich to build confidence and momentum from Saturday’s strong performance now that he’s back in Triple-A, where he holds a 6-1 record with a 3.48 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP. While Povich needs further refinement, gaining more experience in the big leagues is crucial for him to reach his full potential.
Unfortunately, that opportunity will have to wait. Since acquiring Zach Eflin last month, the Orioles have had less need for their No. 5 prospect in the rotation. Povich will likely be called back up before the season ends, possibly when rosters expand in September.
In the meantime, Selby brings a fresh arm to Baltimore’s bullpen, though he doesn’t appear to be a significant upgrade over Povich. The 26-year-old right-hander had a 6.00 ERA in two outings with the Kansas City Royals this season and an 8.67 ERA over 27 career innings. As a result, manager Brandon Hyde will likely use him in low-leverage situations for now.
However, if Selby’s struggles persist, it could create an opportunity for Povich to return soon.
