Emma Hayes has been clear about her aspirations for the 2024 Olympic Games. In her debut tournament as the head coach of the USWNT, Hayes is determined to pave the way for the future by giving younger players an opportunity to showcase their talents on the international stage ahead of future World Cups.

To facilitate this process, Hayes has decided to exclude veteran members from previous squads, including the highly experienced Alex Morgan. Morgan continues to face challenges as the USWNT prepares for the Paris Olympics 2024, with the team experiencing a setback due to star midfielder Catarina Macario leaving the camp because of new injury concerns.

Despite expectations that Morgan might be called up as a replacement, Hayes opted for Emily Sams instead, leaving Morgan out once again. The announcement that Macario won’t play in the summer games came because of persistent irritation in her right knee.

Aside from the 18-player roster, Hayes had four extra alternates: goalkeeper Jane Campbell, midfielders Hal Hershfelt and Croix Bethune, and forward Lynn Williams. With Macario out, Williams stepped in, and Hayes called up Emily Sams as the new alternate, pending approval from the IOC, USOPC, and FIFA.

This marks the first national camp call-up for the Orlando Pride defender, who will now travel to France.

What did Emma Hayes say about Alex Morgan?

Eyebrows were raised when Alex Morgan, the San Diego Wave forward, wasn’t initially included in the roster for France. Hayes’ decision to overlook Morgan again, despite an available spot, prompted questions. However, Hayes justified her choice.

“It was a tough decision, of course, especially considering Alex’s history and record with this team, but I felt I wanted to go in another direction and selected other players,” Hayes declared.

“It’s a balanced roster. I’ve considered all the factors that we’re going to need throughout the Olympics, and it’s one that I’m really happy with.”

Hayes is clear about her strategy and vision for the USWNT, aiming to set an example within the team. Only time will tell if her reliance on fresh talents pays off. Meanwhile, Alex Morgan must accept her role outside the team, even as an alternate player.
