Seattle Seahawks ConsiderSurping Addition of Quarterback Casey Bauman
The Seattle Seahawks might be on the verge of adding another quarterback to their roster. As reported by Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2, the Seahawks recently hosted quarterback Casey Bauman for a workout. Bauman, who signed with the Chargers as an undrafted free agent this year, was waived last week following the Chargers’ preseason opener against the Seahawks. The 6-foot-6 quarterback did not play in that game.
“Seahawks worked out former Chargers quarterback Casey Bauman today, per a league source,” wrote Wilson on Sunday, August 18.
Casey Bauman’s College Career and Performance
Bauman, 24, spent his first four college seasons at Montana State from 2018 to 2021, mostly as a backup. He started the 2019 season but was benched after three games. His career took a positive turn when he transferred to Division II Augustana University, where he became a starter for an entire season. Despite being limited by injuries, he appeared in eight games during the 2022 season, finishing with 14 touchdowns and 1,282 yards. In 2023, Bauman had his best season, accumulating 29 passing touchdowns, five rushing touchdowns, 2,878 passing yards, and 322 rushing yards.
Throughout his collegiate career at Augustana, Bauman tallied 43 touchdowns against 19 interceptions, with 4,160 passing yards. Michael Peterson of SB Nation’s Bolts From The Blue described Bauman as having “surprising athleticism” for a quarterback of his size.
“Offers surprising athleticism for his size,” wrote Peterson. “Rushed for over 600 yards in his career and six touchdowns. Ran a 4.86 in the 40 at the CFL Combine. Loves to thread the needle up the seam. Knows how to hit his guys in stride over the middle. Stands in the pocket and takes some wallops while still being able to launch the ball up the sidelines.”
Challenges and Potential for Bauman
However, Peterson also noted Bauman’s struggles with injuries and his lack of dominance at the Division II level.
“Struggled with injuries his entire career,” Peterson wrote. “Didn’t get to fully put it all together until his final season at Augustana in 2023. While athletic for being 6’7, final testing numbers are average for what the league wants in their quarterback prospects. Wasn’t the most dominant player at a mid-major program. When you want to make it in the NFL from anywhere below Division I, you’ve got to be an absolute stud. Bauman was just ‘fine’ in his final year at Augustana.”
Seahawks’ Current Roster and Prospects
The Seahawks currently have three quarterbacks on their roster: Geno Smith, Sam Howell, and P.J. Walker. Smith and Howell are expected to secure their spots, while Walker holds value as an experienced veteran backup. If Seattle decides to sign Bauman, he could be considered for a practice squad position.
With one more preseason game against the Cleveland Browns on August 24, the Seahawks might have an opportunity to evaluate Bauman in game action before the preseason concludes.
