HOUSTON — Astros third baseman Alex Bregman is dealing with an issue in his throwing arm, which may lead to a potential position change. Last week, Bregman mentioned that he slept on his arm awkwardly, causing him to miss the series against the White Sox.
He returned to the lineup against Boston as the designated hitter, and before Thursday’s game in Baltimore, he was spotted taking some practice reps at first base.
Could a position switch be on the horizon? The Astros rely on Bregman’s bat for the final stretch of the season, but his ability to make throws from third base could be hindered by his arm issue.
On Wednesday, Bregman clarified the situation, stating that there’s no structural damage. He’s taking things day by day.
“There’s swelling,” Bregman explained. “There’s nothing structurally wrong with the UCL, just some little gremlins causing the swelling that we’ll have to manage for the rest of the year.”
Bregman was in excellent form before the arm issue arose. This season, he’s hitting .261 with 20 home runs and 60 RBIs. He was recently honored as co-AL Player of the Week alongside his teammate Yordan Alvarez.
Meanwhile, the Astros defeated Baltimore 6-0 on Thursday, extending their lead over the Seattle Mariners to 5.5 games. The Mariners have been struggling lately and, on Thursday, fired their manager, former Astros player Scott Servais.
