As the Boston Celtics franchise becomes available for sale, Kevin Garnett emphasized that potential buyers must understand the passionate nature of the team’s fanbase, taking a shot at Jeff Bezos in the process.
On the *Ticket & the Truth* podcast, Celtics legends Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce discussed the potential sale of the franchise.
Pierce speculated that the next owner could be someone unfamiliar to the public, while Garnett suggested that a major tech company might be interested.
More importantly, Garnett highlighted the importance of the new owner sharing Wyc Grousbeck’s dedication to the fans, as Grousbeck had led the team to the 2024 NBA Championship.
“Wyc always felt a strong obligation to honor the franchise’s history and foster it,” Garnett said on the podcast.
“Whoever takes over will need a similar mindset.
“If someone buys the team just to turn a quick profit, Boston fans will see right through it. They won’t hesitate to voice their displeasure if they feel disrespected.”
Why isn’t Jeff Bezos interested?
Boston sports fans, whether they support the Celtics or another local team, are known for their passionate loyalty and high expectations. They celebrate victories as if they are entitled to them and react strongly when things go wrong. Winning the fans’ approval is essential for any new owner, especially with the Celtics facing a significant luxury tax bill.
While Jeff Bezos seemed like an ideal candidate due to his immense wealth, he has reportedly withdrawn his interest.
There was initial speculation that Bezos, who has shown interest in sports investments, might pursue the purchase of the Celtics. His financial resources could have supported the team’s championship ambitions and future improvements.
However, recent reports from Nick Wingfield of *The Information* indicate that Bezos never seriously intended to buy the team.
This leaves potential buyers like Fenway Sports Group (FSG), which includes LeBron James as a partner, and Steve Pagliuca, a minority owner. FSG has been expanding its portfolio of sports teams, already owning Liverpool FC and the Boston Red Sox.
