Former Kansas Jayhawks quarterback Jason Bean has yet to secure a position on the Indianapolis Colts’ 53-man roster or 17-player practice squad. The 25-year-old, undrafted free agent stands at 6 feet 2 inches and weighs 195 pounds. Despite not having a guaranteed spot, his performance in the Colts’ first two preseason games has made him a strong candidate for the No. 3 quarterback role, behind Anthony Richardson, the No. 4 pick from the 2023 NFL Draft, and 39-year-old Joe Flacco. Bean is competing for the third-string quarterback position and/or a place on the practice squad. Other contenders include former Texas QB Sam Ehlinger, who was a sixth-round pick in 2021 and is familiar with coach Shane Steichen’s system, and rookie Kedon Slovis from BYU.

Indy Star columnist Gregg Doyel has highlighted Bean’s impressive play, noting on social media that Bean has stood out as a top performer in Colts camp. Doyel mentioned that the Colts had considered moving Bean to wide receiver due to his speed, but his continued success as a quarterback has made them rethink his potential. Doyel also commented on the buzz surrounding Bean, describing it as intriguing.

In his professional debut against Denver on August 11, Bean completed 4 of 6 passes for 51 yards and a touchdown, along with four rushes for 24 yards. In a subsequent game against Arizona, he completed 7 of 9 passes for 94 yards, threw one interception, was sacked once, and rushed for 14 yards, including a 1-yard touchdown. Despite a shaky moment leading to an Arizona touchdown, Bean bounced back with a strong 10-play, 75-yard drive culminating in a touchdown run by Zavier Scott. His resilience and leadership have earned praise from Colts coach Shane Steichen and teammates.

Receiver D.J. Montgomery and others have noted Bean’s continuous improvement and his ability to make plays both with his arm and his legs. Bean, who had a notable college career with Kansas, will have one final opportunity to prove himself during the Colts’ joint practice and preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals. With the final roster decisions looming, Bean’s supporters are optimistic about his chances. NFL teams must finalize their rosters to 53 players by August 27, with the final week of preseason wrapping up soon after.
